a powerful bastide. It still has an abundance of well preserved
small streets and hal-timbered buildings. Close by is a superb
18-hole golf course.

As the second largest city in France, it naturally offers
large shopping areas, museums and a university. The visitor
can discover no less than 70 private mansions built during
the Renaissance by rich merchants and make the most of the
shady banks of the Canal du Midi and the Garonne River which
run through the city. It is home to the Cite de L'Espace (Space
City) where an Ariane launcher is exhibited. This, along with
its Airbus assembly lines, make Toulouse the European capital
of aeronautics.
Cordes-sur-Ciel
A
fortified hilltop village and living history book, founded
by the Count of Toulouse in 1222. Rich with heavily carved
Gothic facades, narrow streets and workshops, where artists
and craftsmen labour to express themselves, Cordes is keen
to treat its visitors to its historical, cultural and gastronomical
specialities....all in surroundings of rare authenticity.
Albi
Dominated by the extremely impressive Gothic Sainte-Cecile
Cathedral, entirely built in brick and decorated internally
with the largest "Last Judgement" sculpted in the
Middle Ages. It has a Renaissance ceiling comparable with
that of the Sistine Chapel. This city is also home to the
Toulouse-Lautrec Museum. With over 1000 exhibited works, it
represents the largest publicly owned collection in the world
dedicated to this artist.
There are many other ancient towns and hilltop villages throughout
the area of Tarn et Garonne. Discover sleepy bastide towns
and villages, rest awhile in beautiful colonnaded squares
and immerse yourself in typical French 'market' culture.
